Three Great Teachers of Osteopathy: Lessons We learned from Drs. Becker, Fulford, and Wales

Three Great Teachers of Osteopathy: Lessons We learned from Drs. Becker, Fulford, and Wales
Author:
Edited by Rchel E. Brooks, MD
Publisher:
Stillness Press
Book Description:

Drs. Becker, Fulford and Wales were each extraordinary osteopaths who served as inspirational guides to generations of practitioners. This collection of stories captures some of the precious and practical wisdom they imparted over the years.

Many of the stories tell about lives profoundly changed by the teaching they received while others reveal small pearls of wisdom that were gained. Some of the stories arise from a chance, one-time meeting with one of the these teachers, while others are from people who knew them very well. Most of the stories came from experiences that occurred in exchanges shared one-on-one.

While the essence of osteopathy is taught hand-to-hand, there is also a long and deep tradition of osteopathic wisdom being imparted through the words and deeds of the teachers and elders of their day. There is so much to learn from their actions, thoughts and beliefs. This book of stories brings Drs. Becker, Fulford and Wales to life. It is a book you may wish to keep nearby to read over and over again for inspirations and guidance.

Author Biography:

Dr. Brooks’ lifelong dedication to osteopathy began when she met Rollin E. Becker, DO in 1975, just as she was entering the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Becker, a great practitioner and teacher of “cranial osteopathy,” had been a close student of Dr. WG Sutherland, the founder of that osteopathic approach. After graduating from medical school and completing a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation, Dr. Brooks moved to Boston and there began her private practice in osteopathy in 1983. Living in New England, she had the opportunity to also study for many years with Anne L. Wales, DO, another close student of Dr. Sutherland’s.

Dr. Brooks has been teaching cranial osteopathy since 1986 and served as a member of the board of trustees of the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation for sixteen years, from 1988-2004. Over the years, she has taught post-graduate courses across the US and internationally; and Dr. Brooks continues to be sought worldwide for her personal and historical insights regarding the practice and foundations of osteopathic practice. She currently teaches a series of courses titled, “The Power of Presence.”

In addition to her teaching, Dr. Brooks has undertaken a number of publication projects. Her initial editorial effort, in the 1980s, was to assist Anne Wales, DO in the editing of Teachings in the Science of Osteopathy by William G. Sutherland, DO, and she helped edit the second edition of Sutherland’s Contributions of Thought.

Reviews:

This is an inspiring, delightful, and informative narration of first-hand accounts of life-changing encounters with some of the most profound clinicians and teachers of osteopthy; a must read for all students and those who are interested in the depths of the practice and philosophy of osteopathy.

Author of Interface: Mechanisms of Spirit in Osteopathy

What a remarkable book; it elucidates the soul and essence of osteopathy, touching on both the practical and philosophical aspects of the work. These teachers dedicated their lives to osteopathy, and their wisdom, humility and goodness shines through in these accounts. Some of the stories are so moving that I found myself having to pause for a while to absorb and digest the truth being conveyed. We thank the story tellers and the editor for sharing this wealth with the world.
